Patricia Chan of LiveWell Therapy participates in the JUMP SHOWDOWN

JUMP Spring Showdown a big hit with students. The weather rang clear, blue, and windy at Chino Hills High School (CHHS) this past Saturday, but the Santa Ana winds were no match for the spirit our middle school JUMP students brought with them! Cheers and dances rang out as each school marched into the gym bearing their club banners and chanting their school mantra.

Mayor of Chino Hills, Ray Marquez, representatives from the Chino Valley Fire Department, and our sponsor, Patricia Chan from LiveWell Therapy, Inc., stood proudly by while the students assembled in the bleachers for a group photo. Principal of Chino Hills High, Isabel Brenes, welcomed the students and introduced the CHHS Health Science Academy high schoolers who were acting as our hosts for the event.

The morning then jumped off with six competitions running simultaneously; Medical Drawing, Medical Photography, Object Unveiling, Future Perfect Pitch (a five minute speech as the medical professional they wish to be one day), Public Health 101 and Medical Trivia. The students proved to be well prepared and fierce competitors! Things really heated up during the HOSA Bowl and JUMP Feud (parody of Family Feud). Everyone enjoyed Are You Smarter than a JUMP Student? and Medical Lyrics. The small gym at CHHS served as an art gallery of all the club's health career displays. The entry categories were photography, drawings, and tri-fold cardboard displays. The students were very creative! Everyone was allowed to vote for their favorite in each category. Students who were waiting for their next competition had the chance to stop by the medical photo booth where they dressed in lab coats, stethoscopes and other medical paraphernalia for fun picture-taking.

Thank you! Major Ray Marquez, Principal Isabel Brenes, Patricia Chan of LiveWell Therapy, Inc. and Chino Valley Fire for your support.

The day would not have been complete without a pizza party, of course. We served up hot pies, chips, and bottled water while students visited the shaved ice food truck for dessert. After lunch it was back to the games with titles like JUMPardy (our version of Jeopardy), Athletic Taping Blitz, Medical Math and March Madness, to name a few. In all the students competed in twenty different competitions! At the end of the day the judges tallied the scores and the closing ceremony began. There was much cheering and screaming as winners were announced for the door prize drawings - gift cards generously donated by ChinoTarget #258, Waba Grill, and Fazolis [see picture above].

Then the winners of the showdown were announced:

River Heights shows off their 1st place trophy!

1st Place: River Heights Intermediate

2nd Place: Day Creek Intermediate & Robert Townsend Jr. High

3rd Place: Ruth Musser Middle School

4th Place: Cucamonga Middle School, Magnolia Jr. High, Woodcrest Jr. High

5th Place: Badger Spring Middle School

6th Place: Auburndale Intermediate, Upland Jr. High

This year was the first JUMP Spring Showdown and we are so proud of each of the clubs that participated. The enthusiasm was felt all throughout the day. Some of the teachers from Auburndale overheard some students practicing in the bathroom for their upcoming event! Their excitement and desire to perform at their best was palpable.

We want to thank our host - Chino Hills High School and principal Brenes, the JUMP club advisors, our students, parents, sponsors and all of the volunteers who made this day a success! A special shout-out to Chino Target #258for bringing twelve volunteers!

We hope to take this experience and improve upon it for an even better showdown next year. Thank you all for your support this year in establishing these JUMP clubs and helping to prepare our middle schoolers for a future in health care.
